The Truth About Tooth Extraction

SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT

Everyone wants strong teeth, a gorgeous smile, and healthy mouth. When it comes to dental care, most people tend to think about effective brushing, flossing, and cleanings twice a year. Let’s face it: Most people do not want to know the truth about tooth extraction, but when you know the facts, you will be better equipped to make decisions about your oral health. Dr. Steven Novick has served the Franklin Square, NY, area for more than 20 years and knows exactly how to approach special dental care needs and answer questions so you know what exactly what to expect before, during, and after your procedure.

Why Do I Need to Have a Tooth Extraction?

There are a variety of reasons why you may need to have teeth extracted including tooth decay, injury, wisdom teeth removal, extractions in preparation for braces, or an infection. Dr. Novick can evaluate your dental anatomy, medical history, take needed x-rays, and, depending upon your specific needs, recommend additional steps if an extraction is necessary.

What Happens During My Tooth Extraction?

Extractions tend to be outpatient procedures. If you are receiving a simple tooth extraction, you will be given local anesthesia to prevent pain. The dentist will use specific tools to both raise and remove the affected tooth, and you may feel pressure around the tooth area. If you feel discomfort, communicate this to the dentist.

If your procedure requires surgical care, Dr. Novick will determine which kind of anesthesia is suitable: intravenous, local, or general methods. The tooth or teeth will be removed through a surgical procedure, and care will be taken to ensure the process is as minimally invasive as possible.

How Do I Take Care of Myself After the Tooth Extraction?

Dr. Novick and his team will provide you with details about how to care for your mouth, teeth, and gums following your procedure. For instance:

  • You will receive gauze from the dentist. Follow instructions for using and replacing it as you recover.
  • Use an ice pack in 10-minute intervals, alternating sides if necessary, to reduce swelling.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to continue the healing process.
  • Eat soft foods for a few days following your procedure.
  • If you are prescribed medication following your procedure, be sure to take it as directed.

Pay close attention to the directions you receive and follow the prescribed post-operative care and instructions.  If you have questions about what to expect following the procedure, ask our helpful staff.

What Happens Next?

As a general rule, wait at least 24 hours before resuming normal routines. Tooth extraction is a significant medical procedure, and it is important to allow your mouth and body to rest and recover fully before returning to a typical schedule. Dr. Novick will make recommendations specific to each patient about resuming daily activities.

Now that you are equipped with the facts about tooth extraction, Dr. Novick can consult with you to help determine whether tooth extraction is necessary for you to maintain or enhance your oral health. You can contact our office with questions about the tooth extraction process or to schedule your procedure at (516) 481-1446. Our office is located at 660 Dogwood Avenue, Franklin Square, NY, 11010. We look forward to seeing you in the office and helping you take your next step in your dental health journey.

Does your toothache mean you need a root canal?

SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT

Toothaches can vary from a mild, throbbing ache, to sharp pain that occurs when you bite, to dental sensitivity, to an intense, unyielding ache that may keep you up at night. Sometimes a patient needs only to floss to relieve pain; in other situations, root canal therapy (RCT) with Dr. Novick is the only option besides extraction.

Call Celebrity Dental in Franklin Square, NY now at 516-481-1446 to book your visit with Dr. Novick. From preventive care to cosmetic dentistry, our office serves patients of all ages and with diverse dental care needs.

Types of Toothaches

woman has toothacheVarious types of tooth pain can indicate different potential problems, all of which should be addressed by your restorative dentist. Dr. Novick treats toothaches, urgently if necessary, at Celebrity Dental. Whether your tooth hurts or your child has developed a toothache, we’re here, ready to diagnose and treat the issue, so your family can get back to living life, comfortably and quickly.

Acute sensitivity: Most often, this type of pain is noticeable when consuming something very cold, like ice cream, or very hot, like coffee. The extreme temperatures cause a toothache that may feel as temporarily paralyzing as a “brain freeze.” The symptoms could indicate thin enamel, gum recession, or a cavity, crack, or abscess.

Pain only when you bite: This symptom occurs while chewing or biting, but no other time. Usually, it means that the patient has a cavity, crack, or failed dental restoration.

Stabbing aches, with relief in between: While this sensation can occur when eating or chewing, it may also happen when simply opening your mouth. The key is, the pain does not remain constant. You feel jarring, quick episodes of discomfort, due to a specific stimulus. A cavity, fracture (crack), or abscess can cause stabbing toothaches.

Consistent, throbbing pain: In some cases, the throbbing starts as mild, but without seeing a dentist, it can escalate into a debilitating pain that keeps you from working and sleeping. When a toothache keeps you from normal activities, you’ll need to visit Dr. Novick immediately. The pain could signal a significant infection or abscess. Without treatment, infection can enter the bloodstream to cause serious complications.

Molar aching: If you’re in your late teens or adulthood and have never had your wisdom teeth removed, an ache in the back of your mouth could indicate the need for wisdom tooth extraction. Sometimes these large teeth ache when erupting; other times they become impacted, or stuck beneath the gums. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause significant pain and may become infected.

Symptoms That Indicate You May Need Root Canal Therapy

A root canal procedure is necessary when a tooth develops infection inside its core. This usually results from a cavity or crack that hasn’t been treated early, so damage has progressed through the enamel and dentin layers of the tooth.

You may need a root canal if you experience:

  • Pain when chewing, biting, or otherwise applying pressure to the tooth
  • Pain after encountering extreme temperatures, as with ice or hot coffee; the pain continues after the cause is removed
  • Swollen, tender gums around the tooth
  • A small pimple-looking bump on gum tissue near the tooth
  • Darkening or other discoloration of the tooth

Without treatment, toothaches lead to more advanced problems, which come with a higher cost of treatment, in almost all cases. So, if you experience tooth pain, call to schedule an appointment with the dentist. Don’t postpone making an appointment.

Patients’ Top 5 Questions About Dental Crowns

SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT

When we recommend a dental crown, many patients have questions. If you’ve never needed any restorations beyond a simple filling, you are probably curious about this treatment. How do crowns work? Why are they needed? To help you understand your recommended treatment, we’ve put together a few frequently asked questions about this restorative dentistry technique.

How Are Crowns Different from Fillings?

Fillings are used to restore a portion of tooth enamel that has been damaged by decay. They fill up the hole (cavity) that has been made by bacterial acids, with a hard enamel substitute called dental composite. Dental crowns are different because they are tooth shaped caps that fully encircle and protect a tooth. A crown is made to look like a full natural tooth and should fit perfectly into your smile. Unlike a filling, crowns are made in a dental laboratory and sent back to the dentist to be bonded to your tooth. This means that it may take several weeks to get your crown, unlike a filling, which is completed in one visit.

Why Might I Need a Dental Crown?

If you’ve been told you need a crown, this means your tooth has sustained a great deal of structural damage or is likely to fail in the future. Teeth may need crowns if (1) they have sustained a deep crack, (2) a portion of the tooth has broken off, or (3) much of the tooth’s structure has been lost to decay. Some patients choose to have crowns made for cosmetic reasons. For example, if a tooth is badly stained and does not respond to whitening treatments, a crown can provide a beautiful substitute in your smile.

What Are Dental Crowns Made Of? Do They Look Natural?

Crowns are made to look like your affected tooth and should look natural in your smile. Crowns can be made of either metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM), dental ceramic, or zirconia. If you have lost a tooth that shows when you smile, you may wish to choose a zirconia or ceramic crown, as they tend to look more like natural teeth. PFM crowns are more discreet than all-metal crowns, but they may reveal a thin line of metal at the gum line as time passes.

How Long Do Crowns Last?

Dental crowns are made to mimic the function, shape, and hardness of tooth enamel. With proper bonding they can last for many years. The average life span for dental crowns is about 10-15 years. Zirconia and metal crowns tend to last a bit longer than ceramic. However, we’ve seen crowns last a lifetime, in some cases. The good news is that careful use can extend the life of your crown. Do not use your crown to bite hard, non-food items, and it will last longer!

It’s important for you to know that after you have had a crown treatment, you will not be able to go back to not having a crown. Since much of the tooth enamel must be removed to make room for the crown, the tooth will no longer be protected from bacterial damage and temperature sensitivity. If your crown ever becomes dislodged, you should see a dentist as soon as possible to have it rebonded.

What Will Happen During My Appointment?

During your appointment, we will start with an anesthetic injection to make sure you feel no sensitivity in the tooth. After you are numb, we will treat the tooth by removing a portion of the enamel. We end up with a smaller tooth that leaves room for the crown to fit snugly over and around it.

Next, we will take a dental impression of your bite. This will serve as a guide for the dental technicians who design and fabricate your crown in an off-site laboratory. Before you leave, we will fit you with a temporary crown to wear while your permanent crown is being made. This temporary crown will protect the tooth and help you chew your food properly. It is not meant to be worn forever, however, and is not as strong as your final dental crown will be. Take care not to eat very sticky or chewy foods when wearing the temporary, as they may dislodge it. When your crown is ready, we will call you in for a second appointment to have it permanently bonded to your tooth.

Contact Celebrity Dental Care of Franklin Square, NY to learn more about dental crowns. Visit our dental office or call us at (516) 481-1446 to make an appointment.
